There are numerous people of Irish ancestry in the worldwide Diaspora who deserve to be recognised in the Country of their ancestors and this award will acknowledge the achievements of those individuals.

The Award

This award is to recognise and pay tribute to one of Inishowen’s most famous descendants, Mr Tip O’Neill, both for his outstanding achievements in American political life and especially for his invaluable commitment to the search for a lasting peace and on the island of Ireland.

Tip O’Neill

For 10 years Tip O’Neill was, as Speaker of the American House of Representatives, the 3rd most powerful politician in America, after the President and Vice President. His grandmother was Unity (Eunice) Fullerton from the townland of Baim in Sleadrin, Buncrana, Co Donegal.

Donegal

Donegal promises wild landscapes blanketed in bog and heather, isolated white sandy beaches and a roughly hewn coastline. And when all of the cobwebs have been blown away, thriving little towns with cosy pubs, excellent seafood and a friendly welcome await.

Diaspora

The Donegal Diaspora Project is working to promote and engage Donegal’s global community. The Project links people from all parts of the world to Donegal and to each-other, creating networks of mutual interest and benefit.
